Understanding the Challenges in Prescribing Oral Oncolytics

Conference Correspondent

R. Donald Harvey conveys his management challenges with patients taking these therapies.

The top three challenges for managing patients on oral oncolytic therapies, really I would say almost number one, two, and three, are adherence. That's helping patients to take the drug correctly, taking it on time, ensuring that things that are important for the tolerability of the regimen, the efficacy of the regimen, are followed.

Knowing that patients may or may not take drugs with food, knowing, for example, when patients with myeloma to take cortical steroids in the morning so that they're not awake all night, and things like that, are certainly important, and things like that are certainly important.

Adherence is a big part. The second part is helping them to get access to the drug, again, as these drugs increase in price, access is a very important part. Third is helping them manage side effects of oral oncolytic therapy that may occur.

Things like diarrhea and nausea, making sure they have drugs or know how to obtain drugs to treat those side effects should they happen.
